One of the more common procedures that our office performs for patients in Southwest Florida is carpal tunnel surgery. Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition that arises from increased pressure on the median nerve of the wrist.
Nine crucial tendons pass from the forearm to the hand in a space with the median nerve. This space is known as the carpal tunnel. If this area becomes swollen from inflammation or repetitive overuse it pressures the median nerve, which may lead to debilitating numbness, tingling sensations, and severe pain that can radiate throughout the hand and fingers usually involving the thumb, index finger, long finger, and half of the ring finger. Quite commonly it will awaken you from a sleeping state.
